Greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment

What exactly is a GHG assessment ?

A GHG assessment or inventory is a list of greenhouse gas emission sources and the associated emissions quantified using standardized methods. It allows to assess the quantity of greenhouse gas emitted during one year by an organisation or a territory. This inventory is made to identify the most important emission sources and implement reduction measures.

In France, the GHG assessment is mandatory for :

  • Companies with more than 500 employees ;
  • Local communities with more than 20 000 inhabitants ;
  • Public establishments with more than 250 employees.

There are six steps to follow in a GHG inventory process (according to ADEME and ABC method) :

  • Step 1 : Exploratory phase : inform and sensitize on the process and its impact on the organisation
  • Step 2 : Determine organizational and operational boundaries (or scope)
  • Step 3 : Collect Data and Quantify GHG Emissions
  • Step 4 : Analysis and presentation of the results
  • Step 5 : Set a GHG Emission Reduction Target and a reduction plan
  • Step 6 : Implement the reduction actions and publish the GHG assessment

In the field of public research, Labos 1point5 is an international, cross-disciplinary collective of academic researchers who share a common goal: to better understand and reduce the environmental impact of research, especially on the Earth’s climate. They created an application platform, which offers a software suite that allows the labs to perform a greenhouse gas inventory, to simulate carbon footprint reduction scenarios and to share initiatives related to the reduction of the environmental footprint, particularly on the climate.
