As we all know (too) many RFIs  jeopardize SMOS outputs. In Europe 4 sources account for a large part of the problem while many smaller points increase the mess, but only locally. One of the well known offender was identified SW of Madrid  and can be seen on the left hand side (bright red SPOT corresponding to 52 000 K!) . This source pollutes a very large area (see previous postings on this blog)Actions were taken to see if anything could be done and SETSI and CDTI in Spain armed with SMOS data decided to deal with the issue. They identified the illegal emitter and had it shut down early this week…

Results could very quickly be seen (see picture on the right hand side also prepared by R. Oliva and the L1 team). To our surprise the emissions are very strongly reduced. But, to our dismay, there is still another source! So significant progresses were made in this area and many thanks to those who made it possible.Let’s tackle the next one now!
