The recent Fête de la Science (Science Fair) in France offered a vibrant platform for researchers working with SMOS data to engage with the public. In Toulouse, the event included a variety of activities :

On October 4th at the Cité de l’Espace, S. Mangiarotti delivered an original lecture on chaos and CO2 concentration modelling in the Altamira cave using temperature and soil moisture data. As for Y. Kerr and L. Hue, they presented the SMOS mission and its diverse applications through intimate discussions with the public :

(Left) S. Mangiarotti gave a presentation of the profession of dynamicien-chaoticien and its applications to the environment. An example is the reconstruction of Altamira cave’s atmospheric dynamics using remote sensing products, such as SMOS soil moisture.
(Right) Short discussions about the SMOS mission and its applications : Why use satellites to measure soil moisture? What do microwaves have to do with it?

The festivities continued on October 5th at the Observatoire Midi Pyrénées, where several artists participated in the SMOS Pictionary game. Congratulations to all of them for their impressive artworks, inspired by the mission’s themes. Here is a small selection:

Many thanks to all those who gave their time to make these events a success !
